CHEOP-CC phase 2

CHEOP-CC is a fuel cell-based system for offshore power generation with integrated CO₂ capture. The system is modular and scalable and is also attractive for other markets, such as maritime activities and agriculture. The system is about the same size and weight as a gas turbine-based system, but with almost twice the efficiency. The concept is based on innovative integration of two fuel cell technologies and includes membrane technology for the separation of hydrogen, as well as the afterburner system for producing pure CO₂ at the outlet. The Project builds on results from the projects 245489-clean, highly Efficient offshore Power (CHEOP) (PETROMAX2) and 616060 Clean Highly Efficient Offshore Power WITH CO₂ Capture (Cheop-CC) Development of a 3.2 MW demonstrator – PHASE 1 (CLIMIT). In the project CHEOP, a design was developed for a high temperature fuel cell module and a 10 KW stack-box was manufactured and tested. The stack box is one of the building blocks in the Cheop-CC system. In CHEOP-CC Phase 1, studies, calculations and tests were conducted for all the components included in a CHEOP-CC system, as well as cost estimates for demonstration plant and full-scale facilities.

This project shall develop a 200 kW validation model of the CHEOP-CC system. Each of the various sub-components will be designed, developed and tested separately before they will be integrated into a mobile test unit for comprehensive testing and validation of the integrated system. As part of the project it will also be made preparatory design work for the installation of a pre-commercial, MW-class unit that serves as an auxiliary power unit on board a chemical tanker operated by Odfjell.
